Recycling Center Modular Weigh Station Building

The Challenge

The Shady Grove Transfer Station & Recycling Center in Derwood, MD required two permanent modular office buildings to support operations at its busy weigh station. Each structure needed to serve a distinct function—one for transaction processing with public interaction, and the other for administrative and office use. The client required code-compliant, ADA-accessible buildings that could be installed quickly while maintaining operational continuity on site.

The Solution

Two custom-designed, two-story modular buildings, each 1,440 sq. ft, were installed at the weigh station to fulfill separate operational needs. The front building, designed for customer-facing functions, includes six transaction windows, mechanical and IT rooms, and ADA-compliant restrooms The second floor contains multiple private offices and a break room, supporting internal staff functions. The rear building serves primarily as an administrative hub, featuring a large open office space, private offices, and an ADA-compliant restroom on the first floor. The second floor provides four additional private offices and a second break room. Both buildings include HVAC systems, and were installed to meet all applicable Maryland state and local building codes. The modular construction approach enabled fast-tracked deployment with minimal site disruption, allowing the transfer station to continue its operational capacity efficiently.
