New Mexico History, Culture & Economy

The land in what today is New Mexico has been inhabited for thousands of years, including by ancestors of Native American tribes such as the Pueblo (which encompassed tribes such as the Acoma, Laguna, San Juan, Santa Ana and Zuni), as well as by the Apache, Navajo, and the Ute.

Although colonized by Spain in 1540, New Mexico eventually became a province of Mexico in 1824, a U.S. territory in 1850, and the 47th U.S. state in 1912. Its capital and cultural center is Santa Fe, its largest city is Albuquerque, and other cities include Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Roswell and Alamogordo.

The “Land of Enchantment” became the center for the development of the atomic bomb at Los Alamos National Laboratory during World War II. Today, the state’s economy is driven by oil drilling, mineral mining, farming, cattle ranching, lumber milling, retail and tourism.

Colleges and universities include the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, New Mexico State University throughout the state, and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro. The state is also home to many dozens of national and state parks, forests and scenic areas, including Carlsbad Caverns National Park, White Sands National Monument, Bandelier National Monument, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, and Cerrillos Hills State Park.

New Mexico also has a large U.S. military presence which includes the White Sands Missile Range Army Base in Otero, Kirtland Air Force Base in Bernalillo, and Cannon Air Force Base in Curry.
