Oregon History, Culture & Economy
When the Europeans first arrived in what is now Oregon in the 1500s, there were numerous Native American tribes including the Nez Perce, Chinook, Klamath, Klickitat, Molalla, and Umpqua.
In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sent explorers Lewis and Clark to map out the new territory in his Louisiana Purchase, but they continued beyond its borders, all the way to the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Columbia River. Explorers and fur trappers arrived, followed by hundreds of thousands of people who migrated west along the Oregon Trail to claim land. Oregon was eventually admitted as the 33rd U.S. state in 1859, and Salem became its capital city.
Today, the Beaver State’s economy is dominated by forestry and wood products, metals, machinery, aerospace and medical-product manufacturing, technology and tourism. There are 197 public school districts and many colleges and universities in Oregon, including the University of Oregon in Eugene and Oregon State University in Corvallis.
