Homemade Explosives (HME) Lab Trailer

Fort Lee, VA

The Challenge

A division of the US Army called Munitions and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training Department was in need of a portable modular laboratory building in FT Lee, VA. The exterior of the building needed to blend in with surrounding buildings and a Tan steel siding was selected.

Two sets of pre-fabricated aluminum stairs were installed for access to the building. The interior of the building needed to be designed to fit the minimum conditions of the bid solicitation. Casework and cabinetry had to be a minimum of 410 cu ft, a 40 gallon water heater, fume hood / drying oven, shower eye wash station and a refrigerator were required were needed inside the portable modular laboratory

The Solution

Offsite modular construction was selected for this project so that the building could be mobile and be able to travel between different military facilities as it was needed for training purposes. Space planning was coordinated with the case work company and CAD drawings were detailed to insure that the installation of all of the furnishings and equipment were properly installed at the manufacturing facility.

Finishes were selected insuring no harmful VOCs or other toxic chemicals were used. A filtered fume hoods made safety, energy savings, control, and infrastructure cost reduction possible. Low E window glazing as well as siding and roofing colors insured reflective features of the building to reduce energy expenditures.
