Over the last five years, the U.S. has averaged 18 climate-related disasters annually, each incurring costs of over a billion dollars. Summersville, West Virginia















In June 2016, severe flooding in Summersville, West Virginia devastated local communities, including the total loss of a middle school that served over 500 students. The school was declared a total loss by FEMA due to extensive water damage. Faced with the urgent need to replace educational facilities, Modular Genius was quick to engage in the recovery efforts after receiving a concept design and site plan from a local architect.

Our solution involved the construction of 55,456 square feet of modular classroom space, spread across five modular complexes, totaling 74 modular units. These new buildings were engineered to be functional, durable, and fully accessible, incorporating ADA-compliant features such as decks, steps, ramps, and a chairlift to ensure inclusivity for all students.

During the production of the modular school buildings, it became apparent that the students would need a full commercial kitchen to provide daily meals. Modular Genius swiftly adapted the plan, accommodating a commercial modular kitchen addition by reconfiguring and relocating several HVAC units on the cafeteria building. The kitchen was seamlessly integrated with the cafeteria through the use of connector links, ensuring a unified and functional dining area for the students.

St. Croix, US Virgin Islands

Following the devastation of Category 5 Hurricane Maria in September 2017, the US Virgin Islands faced a critical need for healthcare facilities after the Charles Harwood Hospital on St. Croix was condemned. FEMA enlisted the help of the USACE to find a turnkey solution to this urgent problem, and Modular Genius stepped up to the challenge.

The Modular Genius team quickly assessed the program requirements and developed comprehensive floor plans for each division of the new healthcare complex. Due to the lack of an adequate water source for a sprinkler system, it was necessary to construct the medical divisions as separate buildings. However, these buildings were strategically placed to maintain the required distance between structures, thus eliminating the need for a sprinkler system. The separate units were connected by walkways, forming a cohesive facility that ensured continuous, efficient operation.

The new complex comprises 66 modules, covering a total of 40,000 square feet. While originally intended as a temporary solution,  this modular building complex continues to serve as the primary healthcare facility, fulfilling all the community’s health obligations effectively and economically.

The installation process was meticulously coordinated to match the site’s readiness, allowing for immediate setup upon module delivery. This eliminated the need for a staging area, thereby accelerating installation and significantly reducing the overall project cost. The modules were shipped in sequence, cleared upon arrival, and trucked directly to the site where they were immediately installed. This efficient process minimized time on site and further reduced costs, showcasing the effectiveness of modular construction in disaster recovery scenarios.
