About Temporary/Portable Modular Buildings
Portable modular buildings, also known as relocatable or temporary buildings, are designed to be reused or re-purposed multiple times and transported to different sites. “Temporary” does not mean they won’t last very long just because they are intended to serve short term and/or urgent needs.
The “temporary” designation has more to do with how the structures are installed on the building site. Portable buildings are not permanently affixed to real estate. They are typically anchored to a concrete pier foundation. The crawl space is enclosed with skirting material, and decks, steps, or ramps are built for access to the exterior doors.
Consequently, floor plans for portable buildings may be less elaborate, and interior/exterior finishes typically incorporate lighter materials to make the building more conducive to easy dismantling and relocation.
Portable modular buildings are energy efficient, cost effective, and durable. Most are pre-wired for electricity and are heated and air-conditioned. They are generally available very quickly, are far lower in cost than conventional construction, are space efficient, environmentally friendly, and can be relocated at a moment’s notice.
Library Case Study
The Washington DC Public Library needed an interim modular library to serve the community while renovating the existing Woodbridge Library. A high traffic corner lot a few blocks from the existing library was selected. The building was designed to blend in with the residential surroundings and was oriented on the lot to provide easy street access to the main entrance.
The modular building utilizes steel clear span roof trusses, which eliminates the need for interior support posts and provides a wide-open floor plan. The bookshelves on the perimeter of the building had open backs, allowing natural daylight from the windows to penetrate the space.
A system was designed to heat and cool the building more efficiently instead of relying on a single location temperature reading. And a pre-fabricated aluminum ADA ramp with landing was installed.
