How Much Does a Modular Portable Classroom Cost?

Customers often have questions about how much a modular portable classroom will cost. Modular Genius answers them below!

Modular Genius, located in Joppa, Maryland, provides a design-to-occupancy turnkey modular solution for nearly any conceivable purpose. With a complete team of designers, engineers, project managers and field superintendents, we can serve as general contractor and take your project from concept to completion.

What is Modular Construction?

Modular construction is a building method that involves prefabricating modules in a factory and then delivering them to and assembling them on a building site.

About 90% of the construction takes place within our climate-controlled facilities located across the United States. Once completed, they are transported by truck to the jobsite, where they are lifted by crane onto an already prepared foundation to form a finished building that is ready for use.

Modules can be designed as single- and multi-story buildings and their uses are unlimited.  Modular classrooms can easily accommodate libraries, science labs, gymnasiums, bookstores and other functional spaces. When you need administrative space, they can be configured with individual offices, conference rooms, and large open spaces for cubicles. And modular churches can be virtually any shape or size with pitched shingled roofs, bell towers, and skylights.

What Do Portable Classrooms Cost?

The cost of modular construction depends on the size of your portable classroom, the quality of materials, the complexity of your design, and the cost of prep work required at your building site.

Prices vary by region and typically range from $50 to greater than $200 per square foot depending on grade (base, mid-grade, premium, elite) and whether you choose wood frame or steel frame construction.

Try the Modular Genius Building Calculator to estimate the cost of the building(s) you have in mind. You will receive a floor plan, specifications, price quote and a design brochure via email in 60 seconds.

Portable classrooms have a strong secondary-use market, so they offer good resale potential compared to temporary trailers. This also makes them inherently “green,” since they can be relocated and reused time and again.

Portable Classroom Case Studies

Evidence of Modular Genius’ expertise with portable classrooms and other school buildings includes many Awards of Distinction from the Modular Building Institute for high-quality projects we’ve completed in the past decade. Examples include:

  • We constructed a complex of 74 connected classroom buildings totaling 55,456 square feet to meet the needs of the community of Summersville, WV. The community had to replace their middle school which had served 500+ students but was declared a total loss by FEMA due to water damage sustained in the West Virginia floods of June 2016. This project received a 2018 Award of Distinction from the Modular Building Institute.
  • Evergreen Elementary School was originally designed with environmentally friendly features and was awarded LEED “gold” status in October 2010. It was important that new portable expansion classrooms also incorporate green features. Modular Genius utilized custom sized windows to match the innovative school, installed waterless urinals, a white rubber roof to reflect sunlight, and a CS 2000 energy management system to reduce energy consumption. This project received a 2013 Award of Distinction from the Modular Building Institute.
