The land in what today is North Dakota is mostly covered by the Great Plains and has been inhabited for thousands of years by Native American tribes such as the Mandan, Arikara, Hidatsa, Yanktonia, Sisseton, Wahpeton, and other Dakota/Lakota (more commonly known as the Sioux) tribes, “Dakota” is the Lakota word for “ally” or “friend.”
Europeans arrived in 1682, and France laid claim to the land. The US bought most of North Dakota from France in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1861, it became part of the Dakota Territory along with present day South Dakota and some of Wyoming and Montana. It was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889.
Known as the Peace Garden State, North Dakota is best known for its scenic landscapes and Native American culture. It’s the 19th state in the US based on area, but has the 47th largest population. Its key cities include Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks, and Minot.
