Alaska History, Culture & Economy

The Russians were the first Europeans to establish a permanent settlement in Alaska in 1784 on Kodiak Island, where they hunted sea otters for their fur. Losing interest by the 1860s, they arranged to sell Alaska to the Americans by negotiating a treaty with US Secretary of State William Henry Seward for $7.2 million (less than 2 cents per acre). Alaska formally passed to the USA on October 18, 1867.

Large deposits of gold were discovered in the Klondike territory of Alaska in 1896 causing a gold rush during which over 1 million pounds of gold were mined from the region. Alaska eventually became the 49th U.S. state in 1959.

Today, Alaska’s economy is supported by a number of industries, but several sectors provide the bulk of its strength. Prudhoe Bay, on Alaska’s Arctic coast, is the largest oil field in North America and provides nearly one-third of jobs in the state. The state is a popular vacation destination for visitors who are drawn to the majestic mountains, spectacular glaciers, and abundant wildlife, making tourism the second largest private sector employer. The fishing industry generates tens of thousands of jobs, followed by mining and lumber.

There are more than a dozen colleges and universities in Alaska, including the University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Alaska Southeast, and Alaska Pacific University. The state is also home to many dozens of parks, forests and scenic areas, including Denali National Park. Kenai Fjords National Park. Glacier Bay National Park. and Sitka National Historic Park.

Whether the need is short-term, long-term or permanent, all of these Alaska industries, educational facilities, and government facilities are well-served by cost-effective modular construction.

Education

Are you struggling with overcrowded classrooms? Modular classrooms and school buildings are a superb solution. They are quick to build, available in just as many shapes and sizes as conventionally built buildings, are reusable and relocatable, and meet or exceed building, safety and occupancy codes. Modular Genius has an outstanding record in constructing modular classrooms, learning cottages, dormitories, daycare facilities, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and complete prefabricated school campuses.

Government & Military

Modular buildings offer greater flexibility than reinforced concrete and masonry buildings in government and military applications. Modular Genius supplies modular government buildings to meet the needs of national park visitor centers and ranger stations, community police and sheriff departments, drug enforcement agencies and more. We have also completed numerous modular projects for every branch of the U.S. military and can address the needs of Alaska’s many U.S. military facilities, including Eielson AFB, Elmendorf AFB, Fort Wainwright Army Post and Fort Richardson Army Post.

Workforce Housing & Man Camps

Modular buildings are ideal for use as man camps, dormitories, bunk houses, and wherever you need flexible, functional living spaces that offer a “home-away-from-home” experience and can be scaled to accommodate from 10 to 5,000 people. Public and private contractors deploy them as temporary living quarters on construction, drilling and mining sites, often in remote locations.
