The Russians were the first Europeans to establish a permanent settlement in Alaska in 1784 on Kodiak Island, where they hunted sea otters for their fur. Losing interest by the 1860s, they arranged to sell Alaska to the Americans by negotiating a treaty with US Secretary of State William Henry Seward for $7.2 million (less than 2 cents per acre). Alaska formally passed to the USA on October 18, 1867.

Large deposits of gold were discovered in the Klondike territory of Alaska in 1896 causing a gold rush during which over 1 million pounds of gold were mined from the region. Alaska eventually became the 49th U.S. state in 1959.
